- Staff handbooks are important to any business as they make clear what the business expects from its employees
- The default retirement age rules (DRA) are phased out from 6th April 2011
- Employers must check the eligibility and take copies of relevant documents illustrating that new staff have the right to live and work in the UK
- The Equality Act 2010 limits the enforceability of contractural "pay secrecy" clauses
- Employment Rights Act requires employers to provide most employees with a written statement of the main terms within two calendar months of starting work
- Induction is key to employee retention. Induct employees into your organisational culture as soon as possible after they are recruited.
- Performance Management ensures you appraise staff regularly and allows two-way feedback with realistic targets and timescales.
- The Equality Act 2010 makes employers explicity liable (in some circumstances) for harassment by 3rd parties in the workplace.
- Employers must give workers a minimum of 28 days paid annual leave a year (based on a worker working 5 days a week)
- Employers must give employees time off work in specified circumstances other than annual leave
- All organisations need to keep records of their employees. Some records are kept to comply with the law, whilst others are useful for internal administration.
- The Equality Act 2010 outlaws employers' pre-employment health enquiries.
